| ABOUT THE PITTSBURG
AREA
At over 200,000 acres,
Pittsburg is New Hampshire's largest land-area community, and its most northerly.
The population's just 880, and many of our neighbors work in the
woods and spend their free time doing what our guests do: enjoying
this unspoiled wilderness area. Get to know them and you'll appreciate
the sense of community and independence that prevails here.
While set in the
Great North Woods of New Hampshire, the area is generally known
as the Connecticut Lakes Region. Here in Pittsburg, spring-fed
bogs and brooks trickle down out of the mountains to create the
Fourth Connecticut Lake. It feeds into the Third, which feeds
into the Second, then the First Connecticut Lake. Not far south
from its beginning, the Connecticut River becomes a major river,
on its way over 400 miles south to the sea.
You won't find Pittsburg
the least bit "touristy," but you will find all the services you'll
need. There are grocery and gift stores in Pittsburg and nearby Colebrook.
Prefer to eat out? We're happy to recommend a place; there are
over a 1/2 dozen in the area.
You'll find just
about everything you need for the outdoor life. There are guide
services, snowmobile rentals and dealers offer service, parts,
accessories and apparel.
Pittsburg's location
on New Hampshire's northern border means Montreal is just 2 1/2
hours away, while Quebec City is 3 hours away. With the dollar
so strong right now, it's especially tempting to visit the shops
and malls in Sherbrooke and Coaticook.
A LITTLE HISTORY
Back in 1832 portions
of the town became an independent nation called the Indian Stream
Republic (named after a tributary of the Connecticut River). It
seems the local settlers had had enough of the squabbling between
the U.S. and Canada over the border as they were being taxed by
both. Sick of the whole thing, they took things in their own hands
and seceded, declaring themselves a sovereign nation. The nation
had its own flag, money, stamps, constitution, and government.
The upstart nation declared no taxes at all, had a 700 pound potash
kettle as a jail, and a General Assembly made up of the entire
voting population.
Chaos reigned. Some
citizens wanted to annex Canada, while other set about to abduct
a Canadian sheriff, rather drunkenly it must be admitted. The
New Hampshire Militia invaded. The Republic's president left for
Wisconsin, the jail was stolen, and just ten years after its beginning,
Indian Stream Republic was incorporated as the township of Pittsburg, New
Hampshire.
